How to Calm Your Nervous System in Stressful Moments (A Real-Life HeartMath Story)

It’s a peaceful Friday morning, and I’ve just finished my Pilates class. I feel happy, relaxed, and grounded. It’s the kind of grounded where you think, “Yes, I’m in my element.”

As I approached a busy intersection, the light turned green. I moved forward, and then, out of nowhere, a car made a sharp left turn directly in front of me, missing my car by mere inches.

In an instant, my heart launched into overdrive, my breath increased, and my mind accessed every curse word it has ever learned, heard, or stored for emergencies. I was angry. I was shaken. I was scared. My thoughts spiraled: All these out-of-towners flock to our community, and none of them can drive!

Just as I was about to unload my frustration on the driver, the transplants chasing “best places to live,” and possibly all of humanity, I paused and dropped into my heart.

Within seconds, my heart rate slowed and my breath deepened. My mind began to quiet, and the urge to cuss out every living soul began to dissolve. I was back in my body. I was steady, present, and (mostly) graceful again.

The power of the heart

The heart is remarkable. It’s not just a little electrical pump; it’s a highly sophisticated center of intelligence. In fact, the heart sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart. When we experience coherence—a state of physiological well-being—the heart’s electrical signals become smooth and orderly. This powerful rhythm tells the brain to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and increase DHEA, often referred to as the vitality hormone.

I’ve been a HeartMath® practitioner and coach for years. I’ve always known these techniques work, but every now and then, life offers a very clear, very loud reminder of just how powerful they are.

The beauty of HeartMath techniques is that almost all of them can be used anytime, anywhere—without anyone knowing what you’re doing. At work. In traffic. With family. With kids. With a new puppy who hasn’t read the training manual yet. The HeartMath system gently brings you back into coherence.

So, what happened after I dropped into my heart?

For one thing, my driving improved. I made better decisions. And perhaps most importantly, I didn’t retell the story to every person I encountered that day, spraying my leftover adrenaline and negative energy all over them. Instead, I remembered my mantra: Be responsible for the energy you bring into the world.

And that, more than anything, felt like the most rewarding part of the shift.

If moments like this feel familiar—when stress hijacks your body before your mind can catch up—you’re not alone. The good news is that coherence is a skill you can learn and practice, even in the middle of real life.

If you’re curious about HeartMath® techniques and how to use them to calm your nervous system, reduce stress, and respond more intentionally (instead of reactively), I’d love to support you. Your heart already knows the way. Sometimes it just needs an invitation.
